Is Starting a Blog Worth It?
If you are building niche sites you will find it is a good idea to start a blog. Your main site may be on a wordpress platform, but starting a blog on another platform will allow you to support your main site with links. How do you start a support blog? Let’s take a look.
You will probably look for a free blog platform when starting a blog to support your main site. There are a couple well known sites for this, such as blogger.com and wordpress.com, however, there are actually hundreds of this type of site online. It is a wise idea to spread out your network over a bunch of different platforms instead of keeping all of your support blogs in one place.
If you fail to spread out your network it can be catastrophic. The major downfall of using free blogging platforms when starting a blog is they have control over your sites. In fact, they own them. They can just delete your blog or you whole account for that matter whenever they want. It is very important to read the terms of service at each platform before you begin. You may find the TOS say you can not use the site to build a blog to use for linking back to another site. Even if the content is good, you may find this blog deleted anyway. This is especially true at wordpress.com.
When starting a blog to support another site it is also wise to do your support blog on a wider topic or complete niche so you can incorporate more than one niche site. For example, you may have a niche site on something very specific like teaching your golden retriever to stay. That keyword may be great for a niche blog, but it would be great to start your support blog on dogs in general. This gives you a place you can link other dog related sites to. It also gives you more leeway if find someone else’s site you like and want to link back to. It is more likely going to fit in a broader niche blog, than a tightly niched site.
Anchor text links are the most important thing when it comes to starting a blog to support your main site. You must make sure all of your links pointing back to your main site are using your keywords as the anchor text. Anchor text simply means the words that get underlined that people click on in a link. Many people will use “click here” as the link text. This is wrong. This will do your site absolutely no good. You must have your keywords in that position.
Starting a blog to support your main site is quite easy and it provides you an easy way to get links back to your site. You have control over the anchor text in these links as well. Make sure you use your basic SEO techniques on these sites as well. Keywords in the titles, make sure to tag your pages if you can, and always use keywords in your anchor text. It can seem like a big task to get this kind of network set up, but realize you will be able to use it forever.
