General Information - Where Do You Start Looking?

When you think of general information what comes to your mind? Something not very specific and you are not quite sure where you would want to start looking, right? What if the information your attempting to obtain is from maybe 50 or maybe 100 years ago? Would you starting looking at the library? They after all have a ton of books.

Looking there would be neat since it is filled with books and the old ones have that old smell to them. It is like taking a step back in time to when the book was written and you feel transported back to that very time.

But, lets get down to the best tools you can use and that is the information super highway which is the internet. It could easily take you 200 lifetimes and you still would not be able to put a dent into all of the information that is on the net now and is coming on the net daily. Start trying to find information on what you are searching for at public domain sites and government sites. Also, try some of the many other specific search engines that could help you that are on your topic as well.

I should first ask you though have you even considered what you are hoping to discover in your research? What about the type of delivered media your trying to locate? There are PDF’s, Doc’s, Spreadsheet’s, Power Point Presentation’s, Audio’s, Video’s, Map’s and so many more which are all on the subject your looking for.

So, what I am getting at really is you need a game plan to get research done really. You need to map out exactly what it is you are trying to find, what format you want it in like I outlined above. You need to know what you want to do with the information once you do find it.

It may seem like I am asking you for the moon here but I am not really. Research is not easy if you are doing it correctly. I should also point out that once you start with the general information and make your way down to something more specific that is what we call a Niche.

When you have peeled away layer upon layer of information and finally got down to the core of what your trying to find is the Niche. Maybe it is about “Underwater Basket Weaving” but at least it is specific.

So, the above information should help you prepare to find the correct information with a plan instead of just going from site to site without a plan will just goggle up all of your time.
